As a provincial organization, the AQVA offers a variety of
programs that differ from chapter to chapter depending on the needs and means
of each chapter and the various needs of the sailors.
1} Evaluation:
First time sailors are required to undergo an evaluation
by an AQVA Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist. This way, the staff
is able to anticipate the individual sailor’s needs for his or her
outing and use the safest method of transferring in and out of the boat.
We would like to remind all sailors to please respect the recommendations
of the therapist. The recommendations are in place to ensure the safety
and enjoyment of each sailor, as well as to facilitate the staff’s
ability to provide assistance.
Transfer by hoist
2) Recreation.
This is for people who wish to experience some time on
the water and do something different for an hour or so each week. This sailing
is intended to provide a change of scenery as well as provide new experiences
for what can be done in a sailboat.
3) White Sail.
Participants who wish to do a little more
with their sailing may be attracted to this program. It is a certified learn-to-sail
program that will cover the first 3 levels of Canadian Yachting Association
certification. There will be an extra cost and the program can be modified
to take the sailor’s capabilities into account.
4) Racing.
This is an opportunity for sailors of all skill levels
to enjoy the competitive aspects of sailing. Besides local racing schedules,
AQVA members participate in regattas with other organisations for sailors
with disabilities. (For example in Ontario, New York and Vermont.)
5) Groups
AQVA welcomes groups to come experience sailing at the
local chapters.
